At an early age, Elena knew that she was interested in all areas of the fashion industry. With motivation to pursue it seriously, started to take shape when she decided to go to George Brown College to study Fashion Design and Technology. At the time, she knew she was on the right track and that path would lead her to continue her studies in Milan, Italy at Istituto Marangoni. Having had the opportunity to study and live in Europe was an experience that shaped her career. It gave her a valuable understanding of art and design, which are now critical aspects of her work today. After returning from Italy, Elena worked at clothing companies such as Haggar Canada, Jaytex Group, and Dynamic Team Sports in various roles such as: Production Coordinator, Product Developer, and Sales Coordinator. Being involved in those opportunities, created a significant impact on her career and was a great introduction to the apparel industry. All of which were a foundation that enabled her to create a new product that is a signature of all the things that she learned and is continuing to learn along the journey.
Her products are laser cut leather jewelry and wearable art. Everything is designed and made on Vancouver Island. Each design is an original pattern that is hand drawn and then scanned and traced into the computer. This process creates the soft copy artwork file that is needed to communicate with the laser cutter to cut and engrave the leather according to each different design. Once the designs are cut out and cleaned they are then ready to be hand painted and assembled. Elena Designs uses two different kinds of leather, white and a distressed black, each giving a very different effect once cut and etched. This is how she created this unique line of signature west coast fashion accessories.
